OMF Overseas Missionary Fellowship

Editor's Note:
OMF took these pages down but has now put one back up.

This site related to OMF, on server in New Zealand
OMF has changes these pages as of October, 2006. This has been after two years of requesting the changes. We appreciate that the pages were deleted or changed to remove language that was unfair in its description of the Akha as compared to other groups listed. InfoMekong, in what way connected to OMF, has also changed its pages, which we also appreciate. The information below is here now only as a historical record. As far as the pages are concerned we feel the problem has been solved. We hope people no longer continue to think this way about the Akha people. If you have any questions about these pages, please contact us.
Once again we thank OMF for changing or removing the pages in question.

OMF Racism

MOST OFFENSIVE MISSION

We assign this rating to OMF because of comments that they list on their website about the Akha. We have repeatedly told them that we consider these comments extremely racist against the Akha and that they should remove them. OMF has failed to do that.

There are many OMF websites, not just in the Colorado area but in other countries as well.

Please visit OMF's website for a look at how they discribe the Akha.

We have asked OMF repeatedly to take their statement about the Akha that they post on their website down as it is incorrect and prejudices people against the Akha without cause.

OMF has never responded to our requests.

Below is the statement from the OMF website.

"Religion and Beliefs
Akha/Hani religion is a combination of animism and ancestor worship. Their worldview is completely colored by their animistic beliefs, thus even the cultivation of rice is bound up with myths and rituals and must be done in the "Akha/Hani way."

The Akha/Hani people also have an understanding of a great world-creating divinity. All sicknesses are under the control of this spirit; therefore, sacrifices must be made continually in an attempt to gain its favor. Every village has two spirit-gates. The gates are situated at the village entrance and exit to mark the kingdom area of the spirit and its people. The villagers build new gates every year and dedicate them to the spirits with many sacrifices. The Akha/Hani people also are heavily involved in ancestor worship and show a remarkable knowledge of their ancestral past; most Akha/Hani men are able to recite over 60 names of their male ancestors.

Veneration of the ancestors is important because it is believed that the ancestors can bestow blessings on those still living. The ancestral altar kept in each home is well maintained. Nine times a year, on special occasions such as New Year and the beginning of the rice harvest, sacrifices are offered to the ancestors and to the DEMONS whose paraphernalia also clutters the ancestor altar."

We have asked OMF for an electronic copy of the Akha Bible, even though it has errors. ;; They tell us it is copyrighted. The independent christian Akha have been telling us this for years, that the western missions control who gets the Bible and have copyrighted it. But the King James version is not copyrighted. We find this very inconsistent and odd. ;; Of course they must control everything but would protest if anyone did this to them. We continue to wait for results from this situation.

We Ask Wycliffe to Release the Akha Bible On Line!

For years it has been a contention of the Ahka that the Baptists and others controlled the Akha New Testament and now the Akha Bible and would only give copies to christians they agreed with. ;; We see this trend continuing and have requested Wycliffe, sometimes slyly known as SIL, to release the Akha Bible on line for free download. We wait for their answer.

The old OMF place in Chiangrai. There is a mission hostel around the back.

Installment Two:

OMF

The OMF story goes on, we continue to ask OMF to pull down the site or change the wording.

We now have the imformation that Jim Morris is the OMF missionary in residence at Corbin College in Salem Oregon. Corbin was formerly named Western Baptist Bible College. They have changed the name to reduce the Bible association apparently, similar to Wycliffe adding the name SIL.

Jim Morris in Salem, Oregon goes to Bethany Baptist Church.

You can email the pastor Tim Baker there at tim@bethanybaptistchurch.com

Tim said this discussion had no relationship to his church, but then it became apparent that Bethany and Faith Baptist were involved in ABWE missions which include an orphanage of 500 beds to take away Akha children in Thailand. The wolves to the pack, the birds of a feather.

Below you can see the web pages, you can write OMF. We provide email addresses below that you can copy and paste into your email.

OMF Story
OMF Journal

OMF runs the websites above, we have asked them to take these sites down or change them.
The following link material still lists the Akha as "Demon Worshipers":
OMF Site Needs Modifying
"sacrifices are offered to the ancestors and to the demons whose paraphernalia also clutters the ancestor altar."
Another Site:
OMF Working in Laos
The Akha are some of the most spiritually oppressed groups in the region and are socially looked down on by the Thai, Lao and many other tribal groups. Their main religion is animism combined with ancestor worship. The Akha have the highest incidence of AIDS of all the tribal groups in Thailand because of their very immoral lifestyles and high rates of prostitution. In Laos the average death rate is in the mid-40s because the Akha live in such geographically isolated areas with little access to health care. Furthermore, making sacrifices to spirits keeps them very poor and encourages unhealthy lifestyles (e.g. infrequent washing).
Naturally we find this quite offensive
