The Missionary Seige of the Akha

The Mission Seige Against Akha Traditional Culture

For decades the Akha have suffered at the hand of prejudice and harsh conditions of poverty and relocation from one spot to another in Burma and Thailand, having to pick up and move an entire village at short notice.

The human rights conditions for the Akha are dismal.

But nothing is of greater odor and offense than the rich western missions, who would "show them a better way" but would do nothing to alleviate the poverty or human rights abuse they suffer under.

And this has not been a recent exchange. The missions have been engaged in this predatory relationship to the Akha for more than fourty years.

While they consider themselves good enough, better parents than the Akha, justifying taking their children, they don't feel any motivation to oppose the status quo and demand better treatment of the Akha.

Missionary ethnocentricism is so severe, that they villify Akha traditional culture and make every attempt to destroy it.

There is no traditional culture in any of these so called "converted" villages regardless of what mission literature might claim about cultural "sensitivity".

Villages are split, bought off, encircled. The missions are chiefly of white or white backed groups such as the Chinese.

Missionaries in the region such as Paul Leweis set the tone of how these people would be bartered and treated and it goes on until this day.

Mission compounds, homes, truck and salaries sport money money money, while the Akha live in ongoing poverty and are deprived of basic rights. The Akha continue to be a target group for which these fat missions collect money adding up into the millions of dollars per year in the north of Thailand.

They will not establish an ethic on their treatment of the Akha.

They consider only themselves and their religious belief worthy of protection.
