HUMAN SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL
Group for Social Dynamics PRODDER
P O Box 32410, Braamfontein, 2017, South Africa Telephone: (011) 482-6150/1/2 Facsimile: (011) 482-4739 E- Mail: - BB@zeus.hsrc.ac.za PROGRAMME FOR DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH (PRODDER)
BACKGROUND:
In view of the political and socio-economic changes experienced by South Africa and the rest of Southern Africa during the past few years, as well as the vast development and reconstruction challenges facing the region at present, the availability of accurate and reliable development information for both decision-makers and development practitioners has become of strategic importance. MISSION:
The Programme for Development Research (PRODDER) at the Human Sciences Research council (HSRC) is a Southern African development information medium which collects and disseminates information on all Southern African development issues and role-players. It is PRODDER's mission to provide an appropriate, comprehensive and dynamic development information service to people and organisations. To this end PRODDER utilises various mediums in collecting and disseminating development information.
Given the potential important contribution of information to the development process in Southern Africa, PRODDER has since 1987 established itself as a leading Southern African development information service, compiling and disseminating information on thousands of Southern African development-related organisations.
In this regard PRODDER has created a number of products with brand names and well defined identities.
Products and Services:
The Southern African Development Directory Published November 1997. The South African Youth Organisation Directory Published June 1997 Future and Ongoing Projects for 1998/99:
The South African Development Directory 1998/99 - to be published in November 1998 The Directory of Business and Economic Development Organisations In Southern Africa. (BEDOSA). Date of publication not yet fixed Database of South African Training and Capacity Building Providers - updated on an ongoing basis and available on the Internet and in smart disc format; Directory of Anti-Corruption initiatives in South Africa - to be published in October 1998 e-PRODDER-mail - compiled and distributed on a weekly basis; PRODDER Development Forums - organised both in support and as a result of PRODDER's research projects Further information on:
(1) e-PRODDER-mail
e-PRODDER-mail - a weekly e-mail development information service compiled by the Programme for Development Research (PRODDER) at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC).
The main objective of the e-PRODDER-mail service is to inform the Southern African development community of important and interesting events and initiatives in the development field. This service will be provided free of charge every Monday to any interested individual or organisation with an e-mail number. Those interested in becoming e-PRODDER-mail subscribers will be added to the list on request.
The e-PRODDER-mail service covers the following categories of information:
- General development news - Conferences/workshops/meetings - Vacancies in the development field - New publications - Internet news and websites - PRODDER activities Subscribers are welcome to submit information and comments based on these categories for inclusion in future editions. This information must reach PRODDER by Friday every week.
The first edition of e-PRODDER-mail was distributed on Monday, 24 February 1997.
(2) THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT DIRECTORY 97/98
In November 1997 PRODDER once again published a development directory with the focus on Southern Africa. The objective of this publication is to support the Southern African reconstruction and regional development process with a comprehensive overview of the activities of all the region's development role-players.
This directory consists of background chapters and a listing of development-related organisations involved in the Southern African development process. It covers the 14 member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), namely Angola, Botswana, Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles,South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The cost of the PRODDER Directory 1997/1998 is as follows:
Southern Africa - R175,00 (VAT include) + R25-00 = R200,00 International - $80,00 (postage and handling costs included)
(3) THE SOUTH AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT DIRECTORY 1998/9
The South African edition of the PRODDER Directory is published every two years (the last edition was published in 1996) and aims to identify and collect information on as many South African non-governmental organisation (NGOs) and other development-related organisations. It is a source of information which is widely used by all who are involved in development issues in South Africa.
PRODDER: The South African Development directory 1998/9 will be published in November 1998 and will also be available on the Internet and in smart disc format. A GIS dimension to this project will enable all end-users to have a better understanding of the spatial distribution of NGOs and the issues they are addressing.
This project is implemented in conjunction the South African National NGO Coalition (SANGOCO)
I hope this is useful, and wish you all the best for your work.

Dear Matthew McDaniel,
I am responding to the whole list because my answer to you might be interesting for others on the lists too. My apologies for any crosspostings!
You asking for: links that relate to the environment, indigenous rights, South East Asian Languages, Endangered Languages, Endangered Peoples, Indigenous intellectual property rights, Human Rights, anything related to the support of indigenous peoples, their languages, environment and so forth.
Here is something which might meet your needs.
One of the organizations (and links) you are looking for might be Nuffic: CIRAN, Centre for International Research and Advisory Networks. An important activity of CIRAN is the promotion of the use of indigenous knowledge in development activities. For more information you can take a look at the CIRAN homepage Two interesting products for you might be the IK Pages, a home page exclusively focused on indigenous knowledge. They provide access to relevant sources of information on indigenous knowledge. Here you will find a lot of urls of organizations, articles, homepages, reports, etc.
Every link has a short description. The website also makes it possible to search for and retrieve full texts from the Internet. Indigenous Knowledge Pages
We would appreciate it if you could make a link from your Akha page to the IK Pages. We will also include your homepage into our index so that people can find your information via our search engine.
Also interesting for you might be the publication of the Indigenous Knowledge and Development Monitor - a journal to serve everyone around the world who has an interest in the role that IK plays in participatory approaches to sustainable development. This publication can also be found -full text! - on the internet at http://www.nuffic.nl/ciran/ikdm/
I hope I have been of some help and wish you good luck with your interesting and important work!
Sincerely,

Our ASTIS (Arctic Science and Technology Information System) database currently contains 946 citations, with abstracts, to publications about traditional knowledge (we call it indigenous knowledge) in northern Canada. We attempt to provide good coverage of the northern Canadian TK literature, but are certainly not comprehensive. The reason that I have an exact count of our TK citations is that we have been tagging them for a possible future TK bibliography. Our database contains descriptions of research projects as well as bibliographic citations, but we have not been tagging TK project descriptions so they are not included in the above count.
Please have a look at the description of ASTIS on our Web site, Philip, and then contact me directly. If you are doing a selective bibliography you may just want to use our existing Internet or CD-ROM services to find the citations that are of interest to you. If your bibliography is intended to be more comprehensive then we may be able to collaborate with you by sharing records in some way. We have software to make databases available for searching on the Web, so you may want to make use of our services in that regard. When does your bibliography have to be completed?
Good luck with the bibliography.

Pointers To Links On Makah Whaling Issue
Written 1:37 AM Nov 2, 1998 by gbergi@wonton.ca alt.native ---------- "Makah Whaling Issue links" ---------- Hi there! I have compiled some links (hopefully in a non-partisan light) about the Makah Nation whaling issue. I hope it may be useful to anyone interested. I think this controversy exposes the many facets of the whale-kill issue as well as the diplomacy, intelligence and good humor of the native people of North America, in the face of intolerance and ignorance.

Here are web sites of the Makah nation and some other Makah pages. Whether or not you agree or diagree with whaling I'd advise everyone to visit them for information from the Makah perspective.
