Bamboo items of everyday Akha life
The Akha make nearly all they need to live with out of either bamboo or wood.

Bamboo is absolutely a wonderful material to work with. Here we show many of the items that the Akha use in every day life. A chilli pounding box.

And of course food. Here we see many kinds of bamboo shoots for sale to people driving by Som Yaek Akha at the junction where the army has their base.

Bamboo shoots are boiled, peeled, and then dipped in chilli pepper sauce which is made of herbs and tomatoes. When peeling generally you need to use a plastic bag over the hands to prevent from getting the thousands of tiny hair slivers that cover the shoots in your hands.
