May 12, 2001 Akha Weekly Journal Akha Extra May 2001 Dear Friends: To enhance the project here in Thailand we are working on two goals. One is to open a book store here in Maesai to boost support for the project. (And Maesai badly needs one.) The second one is the requesition of a large four wheel drive army truck to use in transporting tree sapplings and tea plants into the villages as part of our village and land strengthening project - Akha Forestry. This includes tea, coffee, fruit trees, bamboo species and naturally occuring forest trees for depleted areas. Keep in mind the Akha have been forced to move repeatedly which put significant pressure on them and the land. If you would like to take part in either of the projects here is what you can do. 1. Project One: Books. Send me all and any books that you have by fast or slow post to:
Matthew McDaniel 2. Project Two: Truck. Send a donation earmarked for the Akha Forestry project. Tea defends Villages. It also makes a good income for the villagers. Thank you for your help, I will keep you informed and posted about our progress with updates. Sincerely, Matthew McDaniel
