August 12, 2000 Akha Weekly Journal

Dear Friends:

Well, it is about time for some really great news, been holding our breath here for a very long time and now it comes about that we were finally able, after many years, to locate a good site for our work at publishing, computers, printing, truck repairs and so forth, all under one roof, with a drop in center for Akhas, and even room for a baking facility for making goodies to take out to the most impoverished villages.

So now we have a couple mountain base stations, and one main production center with phones and all.

So this is really great news because it means being able to work hard throughout the mountains, make repairs, assemble books, and keep it all going without disruption or disturbance.

This makes operations much easier.

We now only have a couple items left to complete.

One is our wells for the fish tanks.

However, impatient as ever, I did buy a few fish and get them in the existing water we had and we are feeding those all ready, quite a water volume we have and once we can supply fresh water and ariation we will be able to really stock the fish.

We are doing catfish right now, the villagers are quite excited about this, the kids most of all, and it is just a little bit of what is going to come on line when we get it really whipping.

The goal is to have a large production of catfish each month for the most impoverished villages to boost protein.

This wasn't a problem till someone came along and moved them and messed up what nature and them had been doing for few years, so we are just gonna tip the scale back a little till things get sorted out.

Now we are also going to be building a monster oven here shortly, let me know if you want to help with that, but we are going to be cookin up high nutrition monster cookies for the villages to to give the kids a helping hand.

That and now we have a place for the press and doing all the printing of Akha books.

Course we want to keep as many kids alive in the process as we can. Not an assumed detail here.

Still need tires for the truck.

So to recap it is:
Press
Oven
Well
Tires

Ok, and now we just about got some special tire chains finished that we are fabricating for the truck, these are go anywhere kind of tire chains, once you put them on, you can go up, down, but no sideways and no over, just go exactly where you wanna go rain or shine, makes driving a little easier, since I gutted the sidewall on my last good tire two weeks ago.

Ok, and the good doctor is still with us so we are doing lots of first aid care in the villages and trying to get out to the last villages we haven't included in our circuit yet which is about 50 or maybe less of 282.

Keep you posted.

Matthew
