How You Can EFFECTIVELY Help The Akha

This page is about activism on the behalf of the Akha people and is for anyone who would like to work as an activist to assist the Akha people and this project. You can go to our Guestbook.htm read commentary and experiences of people who have come here and worked with our project to assist the Akha.

Here is a list of the types of things that you can do:

Help us combat the planting of pine in mountain areas that should be jungle. Stay in a particular village as an observer. Approach different government agencies with questions about their policies. Approach various missions with questions about their practices. Help do reports on specific situations in a village, such as gathering data. Write emails.
Compile email lists.
Web searches.
Assist building web pages for the data base.
Follow up!

If you have any questions or suggestions please contact us at akha@akha.org

Thoughts On Effective Activism:

One fix at a time.

Number one is to have a basically simple project, and then repeat it over and over, modifying as needed.
Seek volunteers.
Seek funds for those goals.

Do a journal, tell people what you do and why, and overcome discouragement.
The shared actions via email will help find more ideas and help encourage others.

Take any good idea, no matter who offers it or where it comes from.
Identify things which need change, and make a plan and begin steps.

Be IDEALISTIC, but also be practical to get there.
Don't let any one put down your dreams, your hopes, your idealism.

Move photos and email as fast to the live audience as possible.
Nothing fancy.

One group.
Many problems.
Cover them with five project areas.
Make a game plan to tackle all the problems in each five areas.
List all those problems,
List the strategy to solve each one.
Run that strategy on each problem simultaneously, moving each project area ahead step at a time.

Resources come in in different ways, move that resource to the waiting appropriate strategy for the appropriate need.
Move on.
Run around the bases non stop.
Know who will help, and who will bullshit.
Pass the latter.
Do lots of email.
Keep a simple private site on the web with the least clutter, pop up ads or such. Do the simple practical fundraisers for the basic costs via bake sales and car washes etc. While working on larger fundraisers.

Do not mug the facts.

Set the TONE early on.

Always plan, execute, evaluate and modify. The perfect cycle.

On this page you will find text and addresses.

WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST RACISM
This is the most important human rights event of the year, and is directly relevant to the situation in Burma. Racism as defined in Article 1(1) of the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:

"Any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms; in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life."

The World Conference and the Asian PrepCom thus provide non-Burman groups in particular with a highly visible platform to talk about discrimination on ethnic and other grounds. I am amazed that despite publicity, none of these groups has so far applied for accreditation for the Conference or the Asian regional meeting, so far as I know.

CONFERENCE WEBSITE http://www.unhchr.ch/html/racism/index.htm

Contains documents on the Conference, application forms and info on how to get accreditation etc for the various meetings, which include:

19-21 February 2001: Asian regional meeting, Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran

6-9 March Geneva, Switzerland, Inter-sessional open-ended working group

. 21 May-1 June Geneva, Switzerland, Second Session of the Preparatory Committee

31 Aug.-7 Sept. Durban, South Africa, World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance

. There is another website dealing with the World Conference, http://www.hri.ca/racism/ hosted by Human Rights Internet, which is a bit more NGO-friendly.
